I began my audience research by carrying out
a questionnaire with a variety of 17-18 year old students that currently study
A Level Media. Ratboy’s genre is a blend of
hip-hop and indie-rock, and it is popular amongst teenagers,
as the songs released often explore the feelings of the youth so I felt it was necessary
to carry out research around a similar age demographic.
The following questions and results are
below:
When asking the question are videos important
regarding music it was evident that many people’s opinions differ. With 40%
saying that visuals are important and 40% saying that visuals regarding music
is not important. 20% of the people asked if videos are important regarding
music said that it depends on the artist.
The questionnaire outlined that the audience
prefer performance based music videos compared to narrative based music videos.
70% of the people included in the questionnaire said they preferred performance
based, compared to 30% of people stating they preferred narrative based.
When asking the audience how often do they
watch music videos it was evident that it isn’t a daily occurrence for everyone
with only 10% watching music videos every day. The majority of the audience
stated they sometimes watch music videos showing that they are still in demand.
It is evident that the most common way the
audience watch music videos is via YouTube, this is an online platform that is
easily accessible. 80% of the feedback stated that the audience watch music videos
on YouTube, which outnumbered MTV and Vevo with 10% each.
